Mimi,
ReplyDeleteHaving a downward comparison really does rob you of having a positive attitude about school. It is so neat that you have already figured this out-- many students do not realize how unhelpful things like cheating are until later on in their college career. Using this as a defense mechanism is something a lot of students struggle with, and feeling bad about yourself (as far as schoolwork goes) is also just as common. In my own experience, I relate to your words in this post because I tend to let my grades define my happiness. Having a growth mindset during this class especially has transferred over to many other classes!
I really like reading the Growth Mindset posts because I feel like they give me better perspective on where I am right now and how much improvement I can do. I've found myself in downward comparisons before, and oftentimes I'm comparing my current struggling self to a worse past self, but not in a positive way. I often think "Oh well what I'm doing right now is terrible for me in the long run, but at least it's not how bad I was then." I think that can be just as dangerous sometimes.
